Children’s book illustration for authors, publishers and privately published books

Children’s Book Illustration for Picture Books and Storybooks

A children’s book is not just a sequence of images. It works well when the characters, scenes, cover and page rhythm all belong to the same visual world.

Galantusz Grafika creates children’s book illustrations for authors, publishers and privately published projects that need more than a few separate drawings: a considered visual world built around the story.

We can help with character design, internal illustrations, children’s book covers, book design, layout and print preparation, depending on what the project needs.

A good children’s book illustration does not only show the character. It also carries the pace, mood and stakes of the moment.

Who is children’s book illustration for?

It is worth contacting us if you do not only need images for your story, but recognisable characters, a clear mood and a visual world that works as a book.

For authors

If your story is already written but you cannot yet see what characters, scenes and mood would make it work as a book, we help give the story a clear visual direction.

For privately published children’s books

If you want to publish your own children’s book, it matters that illustration, cover, layout and print preparation do not become separate, disconnected decisions.

For publishers and professional partners

Illustration can also be created for finished manuscripts, series or educational publications. In these cases, character consistency, deadlines and print usability are especially important.

What can you request for a children’s book?

Not every children’s book needs the same kind of visual work. Some projects only need a few internal images. Others require a full book package with characters, cover, page spreads and print preparation.

Character design

A character becomes memorable when their proportions, posture, facial expression and movement remain recognisable, not simply because they wear the same clothes in every image.

Internal illustrations

An internal illustration does not draw every sentence. Good scene selection looks for where attention should pause, where emotion needs emphasis, or where the image helps the child understand the story.

Children’s book cover

The cover is the book’s first decision point. It needs to work as a small online thumbnail, in print, and as an immediate signal of the book’s mood.

Book design and layout

In a children’s book, page rhythm, margins, image placement and text readability are part of the reading experience just as much as the illustrations themselves.

Print preparation

For printed books, image resolution, bleed, colour handling, file format and delivery settings matter. These are not details to fix at the last minute.

Illustration style

A humorous preschool story, a lyrical tale or an educational publication all need different visual solutions. The style is chosen according to the story’s task.

Why is it not enough for a drawing to be beautiful?

In a children’s book, an image does not live separately from the story. Children often understand through the illustration who matters, what feels scary, what feels funny, what feels safe, and where they want to turn back.

That is why we do not only look for the most spectacular scene. We also look at where the story turns, which character needs visual weight, when a detailed page is useful, and when a lighter, more open composition works better.

A good children’s book illustration does not always show the most dynamic moment. Sometimes silence, light and gaze say the most.

Classic, digital or AI-assisted illustration?

In children’s book illustration, the main question is not only what tool is used to create the image. The more important question is whether the characters, scenes, colours and moods belong to the same world.

An AI-assisted visual direction can also be considered, but for us this does not mean creating an entire children’s book from a few prompts. Even in an AI-assisted process, the work needs human direction, manuscript reading, character control, style consistency, post-production and proper integration into the book.

In a children’s book, a child quickly notices if a character’s face, proportions, clothing or mood changes from page to page. If AI is part of the process, it still has to serve the same goal as any other illustration method: the story, the characters and the book as a whole.

This may not be the right service if…

This service is not quick decoration, not ready-made template imagery, not uncontrolled AI image generation, and not a “let’s draw something cute for the story” type of work.

We can work effectively when there is already a manuscript or story excerpt, the target age group is visible, and it is roughly clear whether you need internal illustrations, character design, a cover, layout or a full book design package.

Not sure how many images the story needs?

That is normal. With many stories, it only becomes clear after an initial review whether the right direction is a few key images, a full illustration sequence, character design, a cover or a complete book package.

What affects the price of children’s book illustration?

The price of children’s book illustration is not based on one fixed image rate. A small story booklet with a few images, a 24–32 page children’s book, a detailed character world, or a project that also includes cover design, layout and print preparation all require different levels of work.

Number of images

A few internal images and a full children’s book illustration sequence are not the same task.

Level of detail

Multi-character scenes, backgrounds and detailed settings require more preparation.

Use and format

Printed books, digital publications or both may require different technical preparation.

Additional tasks

Cover design, layout, character design and print preparation also affect the quote.

A more accurate quote can be given if we can see the manuscript or an excerpt, the target age group, the estimated page count, number of images and the intended publication format.

What should you send for a more accurate quote?

It is fine if not everything is final yet. It helps if your first message already shows what kind of book you are planning, what age group it is for, and what kind of work you expect from the illustrator.

You can send the manuscript or an excerpt, the target age group, estimated page count and number of images, intended publication format, visual references, and whether you need internal illustrations, cover design, character design, layout or a full book design package.

If you are considering an AI-assisted visual direction, it is worth mentioning that too, because character consistency, style control and post-production are especially important in that case.

Portfolio: look beyond style

In the portfolio, it is worth observing how the visual solution changes according to the task of the story. A gentle preschool tale, a more adventurous children’s book, and an educational publication all need different visual decisions.

The portfolio does not provide templates to copy. It offers orientation: what kind of character handling, colour world, scene composition or children’s book atmosphere may fit your own story.

Short FAQ

Do I need a finished manuscript to request a quote?

Not necessarily. A finished manuscript is the best starting point, but an excerpt, synopsis, planned page count and target age group already help a lot.

How many illustrations does a children’s book need?

A shorter story booklet may only need a few carefully selected images, while a full children’s book often requires page spreads, recurring characters and several internal illustrations.

Can I request only a cover?

Yes, book cover design can be requested separately. In that case, the cover needs to be attention-grabbing, appropriate for the genre and technically usable.

Do you also offer full book design?

Yes. In addition to illustration, cover design, internal page layout and print preparation can also be part of the work.

Are you creating a children’s book and want to see the next step more clearly?

Send a short description of your story, the manuscript or an excerpt, and tell us what kind of format you have in mind. We will look at what illustration, cover design or book design direction would fit it.
