Illustrations for an intuition-based skills assessment method

A career guidance company based in France approached us with a highly specific visual project: they needed illustrations that did not tell a story in the traditional sense, but made concepts, emotions and inner states easier to grasp. The aim of the images was to help young people and adults facing career decisions recognise their own abilities more clearly.

Project overview

Task Creating custom illustrations to represent concepts and emotions
Scope More than 250 full-colour A4 illustrations
Themes 14 thematic areas, with around 20 illustrations for each
Main focus Sensitive visual interpretation of abstract concepts, supporting intuitive response

Giving visual form to abstract concepts

In this project, the images were not meant to work as classic book illustrations. They did not have to show a character, a scene or a narrative moment. Instead, they had to offer visual reference points for abstract concepts such as wealth or hope. The goal was not only for the viewer to recognise the image, but also to connect with the feeling or idea carried by the illustration.

More than 250 hand-created A4 illustrations

Over the course of the two-year project, more than 250 full-colour A4 illustrations were created. The work covered 14 thematic areas, with around 20 images for each theme. Every illustration was made traditionally on paper, giving the complete material a more personal, sensitive and less sterile visual quality.

Visual reference points for a psychology-related method

The client used the completed images as part of an experimental method connected to the field of psychology. The role of the illustrations was to stimulate the viewer’s senses in an inspiring way and support the recognition of personal abilities, inner resources and possible directions. This required particular precision: an image that was too direct could have closed down interpretation, while one that was too vague would not have offered enough visual support.

A returning request for a sensitive visual project

A few years later, the company needed new illustrations again. According to the contact person, the company’s director specifically wanted to continue working with us, because the visual world and sensitive approach of the first project provided exactly the quality this method required. This feedback was not only a kind gesture, but also a professional confirmation: in visual projects of this kind, drawing skills matter, but so do interpretation, empathy and consistent visual thinking.

In this type of illustration, the image is not only visual content. It also becomes a point of interpretation, helping feelings, concepts and inner directions become easier to recognise.

Are you working on a complex or sensitive visual project?

If you need illustrations that do more than look good, and that help make a method, publication, educational material or professional concept easier to understand, it is worth defining a clear visual direction from the beginning. Send us a few sentences about your project, and we can look at what kind of illustration approach would fit it best.
