A warm festive visual world for a children’s book about Santa Claus

For Takács Sára’s book A Mikulás élete és kalandjai, we created the full illustration and book design work. The task was not only to draw the characters, but to build a warm, adventurous and festive visual world that could guide children through the whole story. The project included 80 illustrations, including the cover, as well as the complete book design and print preparation.

Project overview

Task Children’s book illustration, cover design, book design and print preparation
Publication A Mikulás élete és kalandjai
Scope 80 illustrations, including the cover
Main focus Lovable characters, festive atmosphere and balanced text-image layout

A warm and adventurous world for a festive story

The visual direction of the book began with shared concept development. In a children’s book about Santa Claus, it would be easy to rely only on familiar Christmas elements, but this project needed a world with its own character. The images had to feel festive, lovable and story-driven at the same time.

Santa Claus, his helpers and characters shaped through sketches

The main characters, including Santa Claus and his helpers, were developed through several rounds of sketches before reaching their final appearance. The goal was not only to make them charming, but also to make them easy for children to connect with. Posture, facial expression, clothing and gestures all played an important role in shaping the characters.

80 illustrations and a cover within one coherent book world

The project included 80 illustrations, together with the cover. With a book of this scope, visual consistency is especially important. The characters, colours, atmosphere and details need to hold together from page to page. A large set of images works best when it does not feel like a collection of separate drawings, but becomes one coherent storybook world.

Book design and print preparation alongside the illustrations

The work did not end with the illustrations. The complete book design and print preparation were also part of the project, so the images, text blocks and page layouts could be developed in harmony. This is particularly important in children’s books, where a successful spread needs to be visually appealing, readable, easy to follow and suitable as a physical publication.

In a richly illustrated children’s book, the cover, interior images and page design work together to create the festive world the reader enters.

Do you need a complete visual world for a children’s book?

If you are planning a children’s book, festive story or larger illustrated publication, it is worth thinking about the illustrations, cover and internal book structure from the beginning.
